SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS

Superconducting magnets and coils

  • The great advantage of using superconductivity in magnet applications is the drastic size reduction of the equipment. In a normal conducting device (not externally cooled) the maximum current density is about 1.5 A/mm2, 15 A/mm2 if such device has hollow conductor water cooled windings and about 1000 A/mm2 in case of being a superconducting system.
  • The disadvantage is the need of low temperatures for the materials to become superconductive, close to the absolute zero, which results in high operating costs.
  • For this reason, nowadays, only high magnetic field applications, not achievable with normal conducting materials, are being developed. This is the case of medical systems and high magnetic field particle accelerators´ magnets.
In any case, the development of higher temperature superconducting materials and free cryogen cooling systems, confer great interest to this technology in a medium term period.

Applications:

Some projects ANTEC Magnets has been working in are:

  • QUACO Project: First double aperture superconducting magnet ever with the “bladder & keys” technology. Design and manufacture of a 4 meters long quadrupole superconducting magnet for the Hi-Lumi LHC upgrade program in the frame of a PCP EU project.
  • Design and manufacture of a Superconducting cyclotron for radiopharmaceuticals manufacture to be used as radio-tracers in PET (Positron Emission Tomography) imaging. A company start-up has recently been created to work in product launch (market research, commercialization etc.)
  • Conceptual Design of a Magnetic Test Bench for UKAEA (UK Atomic Energy Authority) in collaboration with another Spanish firm.
  • Development of a superconducting quadrupole magnet for the CERN´s LHC Projec.
  • Design and manufacture of a prototype of superconducting current lead for the, then, future LHC Project.
  • Manufacture of 1500 sextupole corrector magnets for LHC-CERN
  • Design and manufacture of a 25 kJ and 1MJ SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) systems.
  • Manufacture of 250 octupole corrector magnets for LHC-CERN
  • Manufacture of 102 double dipole-quadrupole for X-FEL Project at DESY (Darmstadt -Germany).
  • Design and manufacture of the prototype of a high temperature Fault Current Limiter in the frame of an European Project.
